Marino Partylist applauds the government for including the Filipino seafarers and land-based Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) as eligible applicants of its Tahanan ng Bagong Bayani Program.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Housing Authority (NHA) last June to include OFWs in the government’s low-cost housing program to aid them in building safe, secure, and affordable homes even while working abroad.

“Every seafarer’s dream is to provide a livable home for his or her family,” said MARINO Partylist Representative Sandro Gonzalez. “With various locations to choose from, seafarers can now avail a low-cost but high-quality home through our partnership with NHA. This is a great investment for our seafarers especially when they won’t find this kind of opportunity anywhere else.”

NHA and Pag-Ibig require that the applicant is a Filipino Citizen, a holder of an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC), has an updated account if an NHA awardee, and must be no more than 65 years old at the date of application, and no more than 70 at the time of the housing loan’s maturity date if the unit will not be paid in outright cash. Seafarers’ dependents may also avail of this program provided that they are gainfully employed with sufficient income.

“We are hoping that more Filipino seafarers and their families will now enjoy the fruits of their labor through convenient options,” said MARINO Partylist Second Representative Macnell Lusotan. “More importantly, we also expect that NHA will have a sufficient number of housing units for those who will avail of this service and that their families will be able to move immediately as soon as they succeed in processing their application.”

As the Philippine Government aims to build adequate, livable, affordable, and inclusive communities all over the country, housing sites are now identified in different areas of the Philippines and the following are included in the initial list:
